How to Make your Dorm Feel Like Home

Adapting to dorm life can be difficult in all sorts of ways. Maybe it's your first time sharing a room, sleeping in a twin bed, or only having six square feet of space to your name. Whatever it is, moving in to a dorm can be overwhelming, and seeing your room for the first time...well, a bit underwhelming. Here's how to turn your space into one any Longhorn would want to spend their time.

1. Start with the bed

Let's face it, you're probably going to spend most of your time in your bed. Besides the obvious sleeping, your bed is also your only real seating area, and way more comfortable to work in than your desk.

Orange Throw Blanket

Since you probably didn't have a Twin XL at home, it's the perfect opportunity to buy new bedding that you love. Once you pick your bedding, it's time to accessorize with all the throw pillows. Pillows are a necessity - they're a great way to show your personality, and they'll make your bed 10x comfier.

Also, your bed is not the place to skimp - treating yourself to a nice memory foam topper will make all the difference!

2. Organize that desk

More often than not, desks are just another surface to accumulate stuff. If you want to be able to use your desk to actually work, you have to make good use of the small real estate.

Here are some essentials:

- Magazine folders: These are great to store old papers, extra notebooks, and anything else that might accumulate on your desk

- Drawer set: Perfect for pens and pencils and other office supplies

- Decoration to inspire

3. All-purpose cart

A cart is one of the most versatile items for your dorm space. It's moveable, decorative, and extremely functional. Here are some of our favorite ways to use one

Extend your desk space with a catchall for your school supplies. Keep notebooks, pens and pencils, tape, and a stapler here for easy access!

Breakfast: the most important meal of the day. Make sure you never forget it by keeping everything you need for your morning caffienation in easy reach.

Since not everyone is lucky enough to have an attached bathroom, keep your morning essentials in one place with a moveable vanity.

4. Decorate, decorate, decorate

One of our favorite ways to do this is with a magnetic board. Hang up happy quotes, notes from home, or your pictures of your favorite Austin spots.

You'll be spending a lot of time in your dorm - so make sure it's a place that makes you feel happy, motivated, and comfortable.
