FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Why rent my books when I can buy them? Renting can save you up to 50% compared to purchasing the book, and you don't risk the depreciation value of the book and getting low returns through buy-back programs.

Q: How long can I keep my rental? With online and store rental options, you can choose the length of time you wish to rent your book (10, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 125 days).

Q: When can I collect my book after I place my order? If you rent your book in the store, you will walk out with your book immediately. It will take between 3-5 days to ship if you rented online, but free shipping is available on all purchases.

Q: Can I highlight in my book? Yes, acceptable amounts of writing and highlighting are permitted.  See examples below:

Q: How do I return my rental when I'm done?  At the end of your rental period, drop your book off at the Co-op Rental returns counter or log in to your rental cart to get a free return label to mail your rental back.  When you return your book in the store all you will need is the email address used when renting your account.

Q: I've decided to rent my books in the store, what do I do?
    • Bring your class schedule with you to the textbook area in the store.  Locate your class's books (the aisles are organized alphabetically by course there will be tags for each class listing what books are needed for the course).

    • If the books are available for rental, there will be a rental tag with pricing information on the shelf.  Just grab the book and take it to any cash register.

    • At the register, you'll need your Student ID or Driver's License, a credit card to reserve the rental that expires after the rental due date (for example, for a full-semester spring rental, you'll need a card that expires after May the same year). The card doesn't have to be used to pay for the rental, it'll only be used to reserve the rental.  You'll also need your payment info.  You'll also be able to make any other purchases you want at the same time.

Q: What's the difference between an online Rafter rental and a Co-op In-Store rental?  Online rentals must be ordered online and will ship directly to you from Rafter - delivery usually takes 3-5 business days, although expedited shipping is available for a fee. If you choose to rent your books in the store - you can grab the book you want off the shelf and start renting it immediately. Typically, online Rafter rental pricing will be slightly less than In-Store rental pricing. With both types of rentals, you can choose how long to rent your books.

Q: How do I find out if a title is rentable?  At this time, the only way to determine if a rental is available in the store is to check the class tag in the store.  For online Rafter rentals, just shop for your books on our website. A rental option will be listed below New and Used purchase price if a rental is available.

Q: Are rentals eligible for the rebate program?  Currently, rentals are not eligible for the Co-op rebate program.

Q: Can I use a gift card or rebate card on my rental?  Currently, a credit card is required for online Rafter rentals. With In-Store Co-op rentals, you can pay the rental fee with cash, rebate card, credit card, or giftcard, but a credit card is required as a back-up payment.

Q: If I rent my books online, can I pick up my rental order in the store?  We do offer Main Store pick-up or rentals at certain times of the year, if Main Store pick-up is available, it will be listed at Rental Checkout. Rafter has free shipping for online rentals, so you can easily have your book shipped directly to you.

Q: What kind of condition can I expect my rental books to be in?  Rafter rental books are generally in "like new" or "gently used" condition. If you are renting from the store, you will select the book you want to rent (new or used).

Q: I want to rent my books for the whole semester, but if I rent them before the semester starts, the 125 day rental period will expire before finals.  Good news for early birds!  Rafter offers a free Bonus Time grace period for 125 day rentals that are ordered before the semester starts that will extend your return date until after finals.  To find out more details about the grace period, visit rent.universitycoop.com.

Q: Can I extend a rental?  You may extend Rafter rentals by visiting the Rafter website and logging into your account. Extensions are available for an additional 10, 30, 45, 60, or 90 day period.

Q: What if I decide I don't want my rental anymore, how long do I have to return it?  Our in-store rentals follow the same return policy as purchasing a book.  Check out our store return policy here:   For online rentals, you have 21 days from the date ordered to return the book to Rafter for a full refund.

Q: Can I return a book early for credit or refund?  No, we do not offer credits or refunds if the books are returned earlier than the due date.

Q: Does rental pricing change?  Yes, rental prices can and will change (either increase or decrease) as the semester progresses.  Please note, in-store rentals have different pricing from rentals ordered online.

Q: How can I find out when my rental is due back?  To find out the due-date on your rental (ordered in-store or online), log into your Rafter account at rent.universitycoop.com or call Rafter at 1-877-642-9313.  If you do not know your account, use the Forgot Password link and the email address you gave to the cashier when you rented your books.  Once you log in, you'll also be able to see extension or buyout pricing.

Q: How can I find out what books I've rented?  To find out which books you've rented from the Co-op (either online or in the store), visit rent.universitycoop.com and log into your Rafter account or call Rafter at 1-877-642-9313. If you do not know your account, use the Forgot Password link for the email address you gave the cashier in the store when you rented.

Q: What if I decide I want to keep my rental?  You can purchase your rental at any time on the Rafter website. You will be charged the New purchase price less any rental fee you have already paid.

Q: What happens if I don't turn in my rental on time?  If your book is not returned on time, you will automatically be charged for a 15 day extension.  If you have not returned your book by the end of the 2nd 15 day extension, you will be charged the buyout price of the book.  If you have lost your book, we recommend contacting Rafter immediately to update your account so you are not charged any additional rental extensions.
