Doctoral graduates from UT Austin may choose between two styles of regalia. They may wear the
Traditional style or UT Official of regalia.
1) The UT Official regalia may be rented or purchased by doctoral graduates of the University of Texas at Austin.
2) The Traditional style of regalia is available to graduates from any school and can be rented or purchased
All doctoral regalia will consist of a gown, velvet tam or mortarboard, and a doctoral hood.
The Traditional doctoral hood will be lined with satin in the colors of
your alma mater, and trimmed with velvet in the color of your degree. UT
Official Doctoral Regalia will have their own unique patterns and colors,
as designed by the University. All regalia is made to order by Oak Hall
Cap & Gown and will take 4-7 weeks for delivery. Rental orders arrive
a week or two before the ceremony.
Option
1: UT Official Doctoral Regalia
Available for the first time in Spring 2005, UT Official Doctoral Regalia has made quite an impact since it was released. Orders have been shipped worldwide to displaced UT alumni. UT Official Doctoral Regalia includes a deep rust-colored Dalton Crepe Madison-style gown trimmed with sable velvet. The velvet panels on the gown are trimmed with gold cording and embroidered with the Tower. The UT Official Doctoral Regalia hood is made to match, accented with sable cording.
The striking outfit is completed with a matching 6-sided sable tam and the Official Pin Set, which should be pinned in the tower clocks’ faces. On the right lapel is the Medallion pin, which is a replica of the medallion of office worn by the President of UT. On the left lapel is the Graduate pin, which is the symbol of the college the doctorate graduated from. The Graduate pin is rimmed with the color of the graduate’s specialty. The traditional gown, on the other hand, is customizable
and comes in two different styles: the Jefferson and the Madison. The Jefferson
is a simple design with fully lined bell sleeves and a zipper closure. The
Madison style represents academic tailoring at its best with added fullness
to the robe body, a cuff at the wrist and a pocket slit for access to clothing.
Both
gowns are available with velvet panels either in traditional black or a
color symbolizing your type of degree, such as PhD blue. Cording can also
be added to emphasize the velvet edges and is commonly used to represent
your field of specialty. You also have your choice between 6 different fabrics,
3 tassel styles and either a 4-, 6-, or 8-cornered tam.

Traditional Doctoral Regalia may be rented
but may not be customized. They will have black velvet panels with
no cording. Rental tams will have a 2-button yellow silk tassel.
The rental hoods will be lined with the color of your alma mater.
The Graduation department offers a variety
of packages to fit every graduate’s needs. Choose from two invitation
styles! All invitations are printed in-house and will be customized with
the graduate’s name, degree, and specific ceremony.
