University Co-op Renovation and Remodel is Complete

Austin, Texas – The University Co-op announces the completion of its renovated and remodeled store location on Guadalupe. The Co-op has been remodeling this spring and summer to improve the shopping experience and generate more funds to give to course material scholarships for Longhorns. Every penny of profit and donations is invested in Course Material Scholarships for Longhorn students. This academic year, over 6,500 University of Texas students received a scholarship from The Co-op.

“There’s been a lot of anticipation during the renovation,” said Co-op president and CEO, Cheryl Phifer. “We’re excited to share our new experience with the Longhorn community this fall.”

The Co-op was established in 1896 — first as a co-operative and later transitioning to a not-for-profit and has lived in many locations on and off campus. Originally located in the main building, The Co-op moved into the current location before the 2005 football National Championship.

The renovation broke ground in February 2024 and was completed in August 2024 through multiple phases allowing the store to remain open during renovation. The new in-store experience features new flooring, lighting, paint, signage, and fixtures, and new shopping collections including an expansive, floor-to-ceiling hat wall, experiential custom shop, a one-stop-shop for Longhorn x lululemon, and a better brands shop featuring elevated brands like Forty Acres, Peter Millar, and Johnny-O, and a wide selection of Texas Exes merchandise.

“We had really great partners, Little Diversified Architectural, Turner Construction, Project Management Advisors, Inc. who helped us navigate this experience, and also had a dedicated team of Co-op employees ensuring that construction could happen outside of business hours to minimize any disruptions to the customer experience,” said COO, Mike Seyffert. “We are so grateful for everyone’s commitment to this project. It looks great!” The Co-op will host a Renovation Celebration in store on August 23rd from 4pm – 7pm with current athletes, food from Southside Market and Tiff’s Treats, free drinks for fans 21+, and freebies for fans to celebrate the completion of the remodel and the amazing Longhorn community that shops at the Co-op to provide free course materials to Longhorns.

About the Co-op The University Co-op is a not-for-profit giving every penny of profit and donations to course material scholarships for Longhorns. Founded in 1896, the Co-op’s mission has always been to provide students with the lowest cost course materials possible. While that has looked different over the nearly 130 years, the Co-op now provides Co-op Course Material Scholarships to thousands of Longhorns each year and is the only Longhorn store that gives back all their profits to students at the University of Texas at Austin.
